位於意大利阿爾卑斯山脈的馬爾莫拉達山 (Marmolada)，當地時間7月3日發生嚴重災難。山上冰川突然崩塌，冰雪沖向山徑。由於該條小徑屬熱門登山徑，冰雪擊中及掩埋多名登山人士，造成6人死亡，9人受傷，另外估計至少有15人失踪。

由於意外現場幅員太廣，當局派出救援犬及至少5架直升機到現場搜救，但由於冰川仍相當危險，救援行動被逼暫停。有關方面唯有檢查停車場之車輛，試圖找出線索搜救失踪人士。
馬爾莫拉達山高約3,300米，官方尚未公佈冰層破裂原因。但有專家估計與熱浪有關，因為由6月下旬開始，意大利受熱浪侵襲，山上溫度曾錄得攝氏10度，為歷年最高溫紀錄。當地氣象學會，早前亦拍攝到山上冰川融化一刻，冰雪沖向山下時相當嚇人。
