Here we are in the Mother City, Cape Town, after almost 24 hours of travel. I have to admit that Qatar Airways did a great job of getting us and our bikes to Cape Town as comfortably as possible. An added bonus was that we arrived 40 minutes early!
After a friendly welcome from South African immigration, we met our driver, Wayne from Take 2 Tours, who took us to Rossouw MTB shop. This is a very unique shop run by Tanya Stowe, a former South African, XCO, XCM champion as well as African Continental XCO Champion. Her shop is a former dairy shed right at the entrance to the Hoogenkraal MTB trails. Its an amazing setup with a custom made bike stand just for bike washing!
Together with her father, they got to work on assembling our bikes.Tanya took us on a personal tour of the Hoogenkraal bike trails. Tanya trains here all the time so getting an insider’s perspective on the trails we will be riding on Sunday was amazing. Tanya is an amazing technical rider who we struggle to keep up with on her 27.5” hardtail!
After the ride and some final adjustments, we were off to dinner at Meerendal’s Crown Restaurant with Frikkie, a professor of marketing that we meet in 2014. His daughter is now a professional road racer and Frikkie is also an avid cyclist as well. We had some very delicous lamb that was washed down with a Savignon Blanc.
It has been a long but very productive day. Stay tuned for tomorrow’ report on the Cape Epic Registration process and all the “swag” we will receive from the race’s sponsors.
